Mark Schuermann

Mr. Schuermann, Managing Director, is Head of Public Affairs for the Americas at Nomura, the global financial services company. He leads Nomura’s presence in Washington DC while driving the company’s government
relations initiatives across the United States, advocating for the company before Congress and the executive branch and advising Nomura’s senior management team on public policy issues.

Before joining Nomura in July 2010, he was Senior Vice President for Government Relations for the Financial Services Forum, an economic and financial policy organization representing the CEOs of 19 global financial companies operating in the U.S. At the Forum, Mr. Schuermann coordinated industry advocacy during congressional
consideration of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act. He was responsible for helping Forum member companies develop and advocate positions on a range of financial and economic policy issues.

Mr. Schuermann was Senior Director for Federal Government Relations at Sallie Mae, the nation’s leading saving and paying for college company. In that capacity, he advised executive management on public policy issues and served as a liaison to Capitol Hill.

As a senior staff member on Capitol Hill for 16 years, Mr. Schuermann worked on issues impacting the financial services sector, the federal budget, trade and education policy in the U.S. House of Representatives and the
U.S. Senate. He was Chief of Staff to U.S. Representative Harold Ford, Jr., an influential member of the House Financial Services and Budget Committees. Prior to that Mr. Schuermann was the Communications Director on the whip leadership staff of U.S. Senator Harry Reid, the Senate Majority Leader. He managed Senator Reid’s national and state communications efforts.

Mr. Schuermann is the Co-Chair of the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA) Derivatives Government Representatives Committee which engages in advocacy with the legislative and executive branches on issues affecting the swaps, security-based swaps and over the counter derivatives markets.

He has a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations and Political Science from the University of Memphis. Mr. Schuermann also serves on the Board of the Association of Government Relations Professionals.
