History

The Association of Government Relations Professionals is the professional association for lobbying, advocacy, and government relations practitioners.

Formed in 1979 as the American league of Lobbyists by a group of people interested in creating an association for lobbyists to create education and define best practices, the association from the beginning has served as the place for government relations practitioners and those interested in it to learn best practices.

Notably the association created its Code of Ethics in the 1980s, so that all members could pledge to uphold a set of principles that highlight the best aspects of advocacy. That code is still in use today (with occasional updates approved by the members) and is the cornerstone of the AGRP membership.
